Heimtextil 2027 introduces Functional Futures Lab for innovative performance materials
New special showcase curated by Future Fabrics Expo explores functional textiles, bio-based materials and their applications in architecture, interior design and hospitality
The Functional Futures Lab explores how materials can respond to changing requirements for living and working environments. Particular attention is given to properties that improve thermal and acoustic comfort, support healthier indoor environments and enable flexible adaptation to different applications and environmental conditions.
The exhibits cover a broad spectrum, from innovative textile fibres and dyes to durable composite materials for surfaces and research-based design prototypes.
Future Fabrics Expo contributes its expertise in material innovation and sustainability, together with an international network connecting material developers, designers and researchers.
Olaf Schmidt, Vice President Textiles & Textile Technologies at Messe Frankfurt, explains the concept: “Performance is a key topic for the future of the textile industry. We see this worldwide at our events, from apparel to home and contract textiles. Together with Future Fabrics Expo, we showcase at Heimtextil what innovative materials will be capable of in the future. The Functional Futures Lab connects early-stage developments with solutions that are already available and highlights new potential applications for architecture, interior design and hospitality.”
Amanda Johnston, Chief Design Officer at Future Fabrics Expo, emphasises the objectives of the partnership: “We are delighted to partner with Heimtextil January 2027 to elevate the conversation around the future of home and interior textiles. This partnership will connect inspiration with actionable solutions and help shape a future focused, forward-looking, responsible industry.”
From experimental prototypes to market-ready materials
The Functional Futures Lab will present materials at different stages of technological and commercial development, ranging from experimental prototypes to products already available on the market.
Accompanying information will explain the functional properties of each material and indicate its development status using Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs).
This approach is intended to help trade visitors assess the maturity and potential applications of new technologies, supporting decisions on material selection, product development and long-term planning.
For professionals in architecture, interior design and hospitality, the exhibition will provide insights into materials that could contribute to improved performance, durability and sustainability in future interior applications.
Functional materials inspired by nature and circular systems
The exhibition will be organised into three colour-coded thematic areas: Circular Systems, Living Nature and Natural Performance.
These categories distinguish materials according to their origins, processing methods and underlying design concepts. The focus will be on functional properties such as temperature responsiveness, durability, flame resistance and antibacterial effects, with circularity and sustainability forming important selection criteria.
Among the exhibits are upholstery materials made from untreated wool fibres and living root systems, designed to provide flame protection without toxic chemicals.
Other examples include durable bio-based composites and dyes derived from food waste, which can be used for textiles and wood.
The selection illustrates different approaches to combining functional performance with alternative raw materials and more resource-efficient production concepts.
Knowledge transfer and industry exchange in Hall 4.1
The Functional Futures Lab will form the centrepiece of the Interior.Architecture.Hospitality area in Hall 4.1.
In addition to the material exhibition, the area will provide opportunities for professional exchange and knowledge transfer. At the Talk Spot, experts will discuss developments and applications, while a dedicated networking area will facilitate conversations between visitors, exhibitors and industry specialists.
The Functional Futures Lab will also serve as the starting point for guided tours focusing on material innovations and their potential applications.
Heimtextil 2027 will take place in Frankfurt am Main from 12 to 15 January 2027.
